The 5th Annual Kelleys Island Campout/Mini-DXpedition is at hand. Bill (KB8USZ) and I (KB8YHN) will be scoping out the prime sites in the State Park campground on Thursday, September 7. Two tents can go on one site, up to four people per site. I can reserve two sites in my name; please let me know if you're coming and I'll try to get adjoining sites.
We will be using Neuman's Ferry in Marblehead, on the end of Frances Street off Route 163 on the left as you drive into Marblehead. Please let them know at the ferry tollbooth that you are with the Buckeye Belles so that you can receive the group discount. Their ferries leave Marblehead every hour in the mornings and every half-hour in the evenings, 6:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Thursday, 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Kelleys Island State Park Campground is on the north side of the island, just south of Glacial Grooves. The talk-in frequencies will be 146.805- (the Firelands Amateur Radio Association Berlin Heights repeater) and 147.525 simplex for close-range island communication. If you want to leave your car on the mainland someone from the campsite will drive down to the dock and give you a ride to the campsite. You can also come over on your bike if you like. Nancy (KC4IYD) will keep the Buckeye Belle Web page updated on all this.
What to bring: Tents, sleeping bags and other tent-camping paraphenalia, suitable clothing for the forecasted weather, Field-Day-style HF and VHF stations (and batteries--no power outlets at campsites), food and drink. Firewood, firewood, firewood - They are cheaper on the mainland but you can buy them on the island too. Also, if you are bringing ham equipment and need things like antennas, batteries, etc., let us know. Contact people for the Kelleys Island event are Jean KB8YHN and Nancy KC4IYD .
Whether you can stay for four days or one, you'll have a very enjoyable time.
Hope to see you there! --Jean Ruth, KB8YHN
