The 3rd Annual Buckeye Belles mini YL DXpedition to Kelleys Island, OH

Well this year’s mini YL DXpedition was held on Sept 11-13, 1998 a lot of fun. We had plenty of blue skies but it was by no means uneventful. We had the following people come up, Bill KB8USZ, Jean KB8YHN, Liz and Frank; May N8MZJ, Jean AA8RZ, Byrness W8LE, Jim K8BLB and Paula, Sally KC8JTA and Jim, Bonna KB8SFF, Wayne N8VJA, Richard, Maggie, Casey, Chris KC8DJO, Steve N8CPA, Jason KC8HYI, Amy, Kevin and I. Rick KC8KJB also stopped by on Saturday. After setting up their tent, Bill and Jean had to move it since we had signed up for sights in the doggy area. (Note, last year this was not a problem.)

I made the mistake of buying an ice cream cake for Bill’s birthday. I was thinking we would eat it as soon as we got to the island but it was 5 hours later that we spooned it out. It still tasted great. Jim and Paula spent Friday night in the doggy area since they didn’t know we had moved from there.

As I was expecting my first child in Dec. and May, Jean, Byrness wanted to come up but couldn't handle sleeping out on the ground, we decided to stay at one of the cottages on the island. We were initially shocked at the look of our “cottage” from the outside and the sign “gone fishing” when we went to check in, but the room looked much better from the inside.

The same group of boyscouts from last year were camped next to us again. One of them collided with Richard on his bike rendering it useless on Saturday. May thought she lost her purse but found it in the casino. At the pizza place, Jean had some Red Dog while Byrness enjoyed some Miller Lite, so I became the designated driver. We had 3 rigs going, Bill’s QRP station, Steve’s TS50 and Jim’s Yaesu FT 757GX but we didn’t hear that many OH stations calling CQ OH QSO party. Bonna and Maggie were great cooks as we had pancakes, biscuits and gravy, hamburgers and stew.

So maybe we'll see some new faces next year at the 2^nd Annual mini YL DXpedition to Kelleys Island or get to work you on the air.
